چکیده

This document outlines the various quantities that will need to be measured or taken into account in order to collect and calibrate ALMA data. It is an update of Chapter 3 of the old Project Book, and supersedes it. Traditionally, “calibration” has often been thought of as strictly a postprocessing exercise in radio interferometry, essentially only involving things done to data after it has been collected. In this document we take a broader view, and include all quantities that must be measured before correlation of the antenna signals as well. These are still formally “calibrations”, since they are measurements of instrumental parameters – they are generally just measured less frequently. They are, however, no less important than the post-processing calibrations. In addition, we address some topics that are not even direct measurements, but are rather things that affect the measurement of our desired quantities. An example is the relativistic deflection of radio waves in the gravitational potential of the sun, which is not really a directly measured or calibrated quantity (except indirectly), but does certainly affect our ability to properly calculate delay, which in turn affects our ability to calibrate, for example, antenna station locations.

Calibration Issues for the ALMA

The precision imaging to be attained by the ALMA will be achieved through accurate calibration. The types of calibration are summarized in Table 3.1. Calibration strategies will be developed and implemented on the NRAO 12m telescope, and the OVRO and BIMA arrays. The principal goals to be achieved by the end of the ALMA Design and Development (D&D) Phase are to demonstrate radiometric phase cor...

Imaging/calibration algorithm research

This note discusses the proposed plan for research on imaging and calibration algorithm development related to EVLA/ALMA. Attempt here is to describe briefly a work plan to address two problems which will need to be addressed in a few years from now, which also look tractable and towards which some work has already been done. In the sections below, the problems of continuum imaging with a bandw...

The Dual - Load Calibration device revisited

Following ALMA memo 371, I re-investigate the dual load calibration scheme which has been proposed for ALMA. This memo improves on the requirements derived in memo 371 by using a better prediction for the atmospheric fluctuations at short time scales. It is shown that because of atmospheric properties and of the antenna geometry, a dual-load system located in the ALMA antenna subreflectors need...

Sub-channel stitching and truncation errors in the ALMA Tunable Filterbank

In the ALMA Tunable Filterbank, the 2 GHz channel from one digitizer is divided into 32 subchannels, that are separately correlated ad then stitched together. In this report, the accuracy of the sub-channel alignment is considered, in particular with regard to calibration errors due to truncation errors.

Alma Release Management: a Practical Approach

The ALMA software is a large collection of modules, which implements the functionality needed for the observatory day-to-day operations. The main ALMA software components include: array/antenna control/correlator, submission/processing of science proposals, telescope calibration and data archiving. The implementation of new features and improvements for every software subsystem must be coordina...
